IFEA World Festival And Event City Award : IFEA World Festival And Event City Award
As a creative endeavour, Vivid Sydney encouraged photographers of all ages and abilities to share their beautiful night photography images through its inaugural photo mash up – the first time an Australian event has used Flickr to officially gather user generated photo content as a digital record. The Vivid Sydney mash up, built in close collaboration with Yahoo!7, gathered over 4,108 photos of this year’s festival. The mash up let the festival live on after the lights were turned off15. 5.9 CREATINg LEgACIES AND ImAgES bEYOND THE EVENT Legacy planning is an important consideration for all events and is reflected in Events NSW’s objectives. Events NSW specifically consider an event’s ability to encourage investment, infrastructure development and other activities that will ensure Sydney and NSW will continue to be in a position to attract and host events. The Sydney 2000 Olympic Games left tangible legacies for the city, including the development and implementation of whole-of-government mechanisms to coordinate operational and logistical support by NSW Government agencies for annual and one- off major events in Sydney. The experience and skills acquired by event personnel and the staff of government agencies operating large scale, complex events such as World Youth Day, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and Sydney New Year’s Eve provides a powerful legacy. These skills are passed on, both locally and internationally. The events on the NSW Events Calendar are creating significant and tangible social, marketing and community legacy benefits and images beyond the event. Post event reports help document the lessons learnt during the planning and delivery phases of the event, and help identify recommendations for improved processes and systems for the following year. Sydney has a robust but flexible template that can be readily called upon to facilitate and support new festivals and events. Vivid Sydney is an entire festival designed to celebrate and showcase the creative industries. The legacy for those industries will be significant. The festival has become a valuable asset to Sydney and is positioning Sydney as the creative industries hub of the Asia Pacific region. 15www.vividsydney.com Image: Sydney Mardi Gras credit: Ann-Marie Calihanna Images left to right: Vivid Sydney 2011 SUPERBIEN Lighting the Sails; David Clare; Vivid Sydney 2011 credit: David Clare 92 | IFEA WORLD FESTIVAL AND EVENT CITY AWARD |93
