As an example, for Sydney New Year’s Eve the State Emergency Service (SES) assists in the coordination of the managed access area in the CBD, and a number of community organisations such as Guides Australia and Rovers (Scouts) volunteer their time to assist with the delivery of a picnic for 1,000 children with special needs and their carers as part of the New Year’s Eve celebrations. This helps build a skilled and sustainable events workforce. In 2010, the NSW Department of Education and Training rolled out its new Student Volunteering initiative across the State. Schools encourage students to look for volunteering opportunities in a variety of ways, including Service Learning that combines specific subject or curriculum outcomes with community service or volunteering9. schools and institutions in the local government area. The City engages in secondments and internships for Sydney New Year’s Eve and recruits from various institutions, such as National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and interstate organisations, such as Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Many corporations offer their staff on secondment during festivals and events as part of their training, viewing it as an opportunity to engage with customers. Sydney Biennale are largely successful due to the efforts of the volunteers. The Centre for Volunteering is the peak body in NSW promoting and supporting volunteering and community participation. Events to which they have supplied volunteers include City2Surf, Sydney Royal Easter Show and Sydney New Year’s Eve. The City of Sydney draws volunteers for a number of the City’s festivals and events through its relationship with the educational institution TAFE NSW (Technical and Further Education NSW) and by invitation to other appropriate 4.1 VOLuNTEER INVOLVEmENT The resurgence of volunteerism as part of Sydney’s events culture was spurred by the outstanding success of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and is now a vital factor underpinning the broader events calendar.
