IFEA World Festival And Event City Award : IFEA World Festival And Event City Award
Hosting one million people around the harbour foreshore to watch the annual New Year’s Eve celebrations for example relies on the engagement of a complex network of stakeholders including event partners, local, state and commonwealth government agencies, City of Sydney, service providers, landowners and venues. The NSW Government has a dedicated central team in the Community Engagement and Events Division (CEED). This team reports directly to the state Premier (equivalent to Governor) and is permanently staffed to coordinate the delivery of events. This centralised approach is unusual and is a legacy from the success of Government involvement in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It sends a clear message to Government and the community about the importance of festivals and events. The introduction of the Major Events Act 2009 (NSW Legislation), as well as the appointment of a Minister for Major Events provides a supportive environment in which to stage major festivals and events. Sydney has an enviable record for hosting major festivals and events that require intense and proactive support from Government. The NSW Government recently announced the formation of Destination NSW. A new statutory tourism and events authority, Destination NSW will bring together Events NSW and Tourism NSW, underpinning the Government's goal of doubling expenditure by tourists in NSW by 2020. Destination NSW will be backed by an expenditure of $400 million over the next four years to realise the full potential of Sydney and regional NSW as a global tourism and event destination.
