IFEA World Festival And Event City Award : IFEA World Festival And Event City Award
PREmIER’S mESSAgE Sydney offers a range of exciting festivals and events including our world famous New Year’s Eve, Sydney Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Sydney Writers’ Festival, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney International Art Series, Vivid Sydney and Crave Sydney International Food Festival. Our city is home to some of the world’s leading sporting events, securing Rugby’s Bledisloe Cup for the next decade, as well as introducing innovative events such as the Australian Open of Surfing commencing in February 2012, following in the footsteps of the highly successful US Open of Surfing held at Huntington Beach, California. In recent times Sydney has re- affirmed its status as the number one live performance destination in Australia, securing a number of first-run musicals such as The Addams Family, Legally Blonde and ANNIE, as well as the global premiere of Strictly Ballroom the Musical. These musicals add to major performance events such as Shakespeare’s Richard III starring Kevin Spacey, the Australian World Orchestra, and La Traviata: Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour 2012. Whether it be sport, arts and entertainment or celebrations of diverse cultural life, Sydney’s profile as a major events destination is progressing from strength to strength and continues to rise alongside some of the world’s most renowned global cities. Investing in events that embody a bold vision of the city’s future is a key priority for the new NSW Government. We have established Destination NSW, and through this new entity, will continue to improve established events in Sydney, develop new events, and bid against cities across the globe for the best event experiences the world has to offer. I encourage you to consider Sydney’s many merits when assessing the ‘Top Global City’ candidates for the IFEA World Festival and Event City Awards 2011. Yours Sincerely The Hon. Barry O’Farrell MP NSW Premier On behalf of the New South Wales (NSW) Government, I strongly endorse Sydney’s application for the ‘Top Global City’ at the 2011 International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) World Festival and Event City Awards. An inaugural winner of the award in 2010, Sydney is Australia’s premier city, tourism and lifestyle brand: vibrant, cosmopolitan, creative and blessed with the natural beauty of its unique landscape and breathtaking harbour. With a culturally-diverse population of 4.6 million and over 200 languages spoken, Sydney is also Australia’s business and media capital, and home to our nation’s thriving creative industries. Investing in events that embody a bold vision of the city’s future is a key priority. Image: Sydney New Year’s Eve; City of Sydney 3 | IFEA WORLD FESTIVAL AND EVENT CITY AWARD |4
